Loncar Lyon Jenkins Announces the Winner of the Community Leadership Scholarship, Spencer Burke

DALLAS, TX, January 27, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ — Personal injury law firm Loncar Lyon Jenkins announced the winner of its 2022 Community Leadership Scholarship, Spencer Burke. Intended to award one deserving student for excellence in service and leadership, Burke will receive $2,500 to pursue college studies in the Fall of 2022.

Loncar Lyon Jenkins has served injury victims in Texas since 1988. The Community Leadership Scholarship supports promising young leaders on their path to business leadership, philanthropy, and future service endeavors.

This year’s award winner, Spencer Burke, demonstrated an exemplary commitment to service. As a student at St. Mark’s School of Texas, Spencer spent his high school years organizing several conservation projects, serving as a Boy Scouts Senior Patrol Leader, and helping elementary school students build their chess skills, among many other community projects.

Protecting the Bee Population Among Mr. Burke’s Service Projects

Perhaps most significantly, Mr. Burke organized a Dallas-area project to protect the local solitary bee population—an endeavor that took several years and three federal grants to complete.

Mr. Burke was inspired to act after he learned that one in four solitary bees faces extinction. To design the project, he worked extensively with scientists, including Texas Master Naturalists, and took an eight-hour course on bees. He then organized more than 100 volunteers to build nesting boxes for pollinators. The effort involved cutting wood, drilling holes, and installing the boxes across the Metro Dallas area. The project also included removing invasive species that threaten the local bee population.

The student’s other conservation efforts focused on the Blackland Prairie, where Mr. Burke organized fellow Boy Scouts and area residents to remove invasive species from the endangered ecosystem and spread seeds to promote native plant growth.

For his ecological leadership, among other accomplishments, Mr. Burke earned every award available in Boy Scouts, including the Boy Scout’s William T. Hornaday Silver Conservation Award. That’s an achievement completed by no more than 25 Scouts since 1910. He’s also the recipient of several national awards, such as the George H.W. Bush Points of Light Award.

Mr. Burke Monitored Mosquito Habitats During NASA Summer Internship

Mr. Burke’s academic ambitions are equally noteworthy. During his time at St. Mark’s School of Texas, Mr. Burke earned a 4.01 GPA, including a substantial AP Honors curriculum. He also earned a summer internship at NASA’s Center for Space Research, where he worked with satellite data to help scientists predict where mosquito habitats could be located. He went on to publish his findings and created a publicly available database for the malaria-transmitting Anopheles mosquito.

In the future, the aspiring college student hopes to remain engaged with space research. Specifically, he aims his sights at space debris cleanup. After learning that only 27,000 pieces of debris are tracked by scientists—while millions of pieces float out in space—Burke wants to be part of the solution. The student writes that he believes in “freeing up space so that we can all go ‘where no man has gone before.'”
