How Serious Is Pet Homelessness in the United States?

The United States is home to an exceptionally large population of homeless pets. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) reports that approximately 6.3 million stray pets enter shelters each year nationwide. Fortunately, this number represents a considerable drop from a rate of 7.2 million over a decade ago. We are committed to bringing down the number even further.

Another heartbreaking aspect of this national problem is the number of stray pets killed when a home cannot be found for them. Sadly, over 900,000 stray pets are euthanized annually in the United States. Though this number represents a huge drop from the 2.6 million euthanized in 2011, we still have a long way to go before zero strays are killed for simply not having a place to go. As a society, we can do better.

How Can We Help in Connecticut?

The best place to make a positive change is in your own local community. In Connecticut, there are approximately 3.6 million pets in animal shelters at any given time based on data from 2019-2021.

Fortunately, the rate of homeless pets who are spared their lives — sometimes referred to as the “save rate” — is 92% in Connecticut, significantly higher than in many other states. Further, of the 92 animal shelters in the state, 78 are no-kill shelters committed to housing their animals until they find a home.

Even so, 281 homeless dogs and cats were euthanized in Connecticut in 2021. By spreading the word, 92% could easily become 100%. By working together, we can achieve this goal.
