Houston Unveils Main Street Promenade Project: 11-Block Pedestrian Corridor to Transform Downtown Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Houston, Unknown, November 1, 2025 — Houston has announced the launch of the Main Street Promenade, an ambitious 11-block pedestrian corridor set to redefine downtown ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Construction began on 2 June 2025, with completion targeted for June 2026, just as the city prepares to welcome international visitors.

The £9.7 million initiative, led by Downtown Houston+ in partnership with city authorities, will transform Main Street from Commerce to Allen’s Landing. The project features a raised, curb-free walkway, expanded outdoor dining, and over 80 new trees, creating shaded “outdoor rooms” for social gatherings and events.

Mayor John Whitmire described the Promenade as “a transformative project defining the next chapter of Main Street and Downtown.” Local businesses have voiced strong support, anticipating increased foot traffic and economic vitality. The corridor’s design prioritises accessibility, safety, and vibrant public spaces, ensuring a welcoming environment for both residents and visitors.

Upon completion, the Main Street Promenade is expected to serve as a lasting legacy, enhancing Houston’s reputation as a walkable, dynamic destination.
