MEDIA, PA, December 09, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ — Community members from Delaware County and beyond attended an Opioid Community Awareness and Education event at The Pennsylvania Institute of Technology on Saturday, December 2nd.

A panel of 5 speakers took the stage to speak about topics such as the importance of addressing the social determinants of health within the context of the opioid crisis, relapse prevention, the current state of the crisis, and information about the local, on-the-ground efforts in Delaware County to treat and support those with opioid use and other substance use disorders. Representatives from Mirmont Treatment Center, MVP Recovery, and Shevlin Family Foundation participated in the panel, along with an expert researcher from The University of Delaware.

A robust question and answer session was held before attendees took part in a P.I.T. Nursing Instructor-led Narcan Training, where instructors demonstrated how to administer Narcan to someone experiencing an overdose. Narcan and fentanyl test strips were distributed to attendees, as well as resources about local support for families and people experiencing substance or opioid use disorder.

This community education event was funded through a generous Opioid Settlement Fund grant from the Delaware County Council and the Delaware County Opioid Task Force.
