Texas, Unknown, November 1, 2025 — The Texas Legislature announced the formation of the state’s first Artificial Intelligence Oversight Committee on Saturday, marking a significant step towards responsible innovation in public services. The committee, established under the Texas Responsible Artificial Intelligence Governance Act signed by Governor Greg Abbott on June 22, 2025, will begin operations on January 1, 2026.
Comprising ten expert members, the committee will operate within the Department of Information Resources, providing guidance on ethical AI deployment, data privacy, and legal compliance. Its remit includes issuing advisory opinions to state agencies, recommending legislative updates, and setting standards for fairness and safety in AI systems.
A key achievement is the introduction of a regulatory “sandbox,” allowing developers to test AI applications in a controlled environment, fostering technological advancement while ensuring robust oversight. Lawmakers emphasised that these measures will help Texas balance innovation with public trust, positioning the state as a national leader in AI governance.
