GRAFTON, IL, June 01, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ — On June 6, a powerful vision years in the making will become reality as the National Memorial of Military Ascent (NMMA) officially opens with a full day of events honoring the anniversary of D-Day.
Set along the limestone bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River and the Great River Road, the memorial draws direct inspiration from the heroic actions of U.S. Army Rangers at Pointe du Hoc. This event is one of the most daring missions of World War II.
The idea for the memorial was sparked in 2019, when Grafton Mayor Mike Morrow stood beneath the city’s towering bluffs and recognized a striking resemblance to the cliffs in Normandy he had recently visited. The memorial is created to honor all U.S. veterans who have served our country.
That moment led to a bold initiative: to create a national destination that not only honors the bravery displayed on D-Day but also celebrates the broader legacy of military service across generations. “This is a place where we can tell those stories in a way that connects with people, especially younger generations,” Morrow said. “This project is about education, connection, and ensuring these stories are never lost.”
At the heart of the memorial will be a one-of-a-kind dramatic bronze installation replicating the Army Rangers scaling the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc. The centerpiece includes twelve life-sized sculptures, with six figures anchored directly into the bluff to recreate the intensity and courage of that historic climb.
